Advice for Healthcare Workers

Monday 16th March

Today the Boris Johnson announced the most significant disruption to the country yet amidst increasing concern that COVID-19 is beginning to enter the exponential phase of infective the with cases expected to double every 5 days, this doesn’t seem much but with approximately 1500 cases confirmed and up to 50,000 thought to be infected that means in just 3 weeks those numbers could be 12,000 confirmed and 400,000 infected, this time next month we are looking at 1million infected. If the statistics are correct this means 50-100,000 requiring critical care.
With only 4,000 ITU beds in the UK this would clearly be catastrophic.
The announcement was therefore made that:

  • Anyone living with someone with a persistent cough or fever is required to self isolate for 14days, hopefully covering the incubation period long enough for you to show symptoms.
  • The heard immunity theory has been dropped, possibly due to the evolving evidence that immunity may only be temporary. It seems that particularly in healthcare workers the immune system can become so over whelmed when a patient coughs in our face, that we are once again liable to become unwell again.
